Does my brick wall need mortar repair?

Brick repair in Corpus Christi is mostly about the mortar. We fix worn, cracked or crumbling joints so your brick wall keeps shedding water and holds together.

Most calls start with something you've noticed, like gaps opening between bricks or mortar that turns to sand when you touch it. On older homes that's usually age, but water can be behind it too, so I work out what's wearing the joints before we cut any out. The job itself is cutting out the worn mortar, packing in fresh mortar and tooling the joints to match the rest of the wall.

The price mostly turns on how many joints need work, how high and how easy to reach the wall is, and how much care it takes to match your mortar. The schedule turns on the weather and on anything that has to happen first, like a drainage fix or a permit. My written estimate spells out what we'll do on your wall.

What matters in a brick repair job

The mortar you can't see from the street decides how long a brick repair holds up, so these are the points I'd want you to know before we start.

  • Mortar no stronger than the old

New mortar should be no stronger than the old, because a harder mix puts the load on the new joints and can damage brick beyond repair. Ask which mortar a contractor plans to use.

  • A test patch first

Before we fill a whole wall, we put a small patch of the new mortar somewhere out of sight, so you can see whether it matches before we go further.

  • Stop the water first

A leaking downspout can wash mortar right out of the joints, and a federal preservation guide says to replace it and repair other drainage before the joint work starts.

  • Hand tools or power tools

A hammer and chisel suit small areas, while grinders and saws clear big walls faster but can damage the brick around the joints. Ask which method fits your wall.

  • Storm repairs near the Gulf

For homes in the first row of Texas counties along the Gulf, the Texas Department of Insurance says to ask your insurance agent whether repairs need to meet building codes.

Brick repair questions we hear

What is tuckpointing on a brick house?

Tuckpointing is the common name for repointing, which means cutting worn mortar out of the joints in a brick wall and filling them with fresh mortar. It's the main job in most brick repair, since the joints are what hold the brick together and keep water out.

How do I know if the mortar on my brick needs repair?

Mortar needs repair when it has worn back more than 1/4 inch, crumbles, has holes, or shows hairline cracks or cracks between the brick and the mortar. Repointing takes a lot of labor and sound original joints are better than new ones, so we only cut out the joints that show those signs. Heavy white streaks just below the joints point to something else, water getting into the wall higher up.

How long does repointed mortar last?

Mortar joints typically last more than 25 years, while the brick itself can go well past 100. How long yours last depends on how exposed the wall is and what the mortar is made of, so plan on repointing long before the brick wears out.

Who handles building permits for brick repair in Corpus Christi?

The city's Development Services Department handles all permitting in Corpus Christi. Its permit list names foundation repair, remodel and siding but not brick repair, so check with that office about your job. If yours needs a permit, we handle the application and keep you posted as it moves along.

How much does brick repair cost in Corpus Christi?

The cost comes down to how much mortar has to come out and what it takes to do it right on your wall, so I won't guess at a number before I've seen it. Cutting out only the worn joints keeps the bill down, while a tall wall, slow hand work around delicate brick or a drainage fix first pushes it up. Send a few photos and I'll come take a look.

How do I choose a contractor for brick repair in Corpus Christi?

Ask about past repointing jobs, because a great bricklayer isn't always skilled at repointing, or have them show their work on a hidden section of your wall. The state insurance department also advises checking a contractor's name, address, phone number and references, confirming insurance or a bond, and getting at least three written bids to compare.
